Important Info

All of our products are hand-painted by skilled artisans in Mexico, making each piece truly one of a kind. Because of this, there may be small imperfections, quirks, or slight color variations—these are natural and a beautiful part of the artistry. Rest assured, we carefully inspect every item to ensure there are no chips or cracks before shipping. By purchasing, you acknowledge and accept these characteristics as part of handmade craftsmanship. Thank you.

How It’s Made (Engobe)

Engobe is a traditional ceramic technique commonly used by artisans in Mexico. It’s made by mixing refined clay, water, and natural mineral pigments into a smooth liquid, which is then brushed or poured onto a piece by hand before it’s fired. Because it’s applied while the clay is still raw or partially dry, the design becomes part of the piece as it goes through the kiln.

Since engobe is clay-based (not paint), it fuses with the ceramic body during firing. The finished surface has a soft, matte, earthy feel with gentle texture and natural variation. Colors tend to look more muted and organic than glossy ceramics, which gives engobe its warm, handmade character. Compared to Talavera, which is known for its bright, glazed finish, engobe has a more subtle and natural look.

Engobe can sometimes be mistaken for cold-painted ceramics, and that’s a totally fair confusion. The difference is that cold paint is added after firing and sits on the surface, while true engobe is fired with the piece itself. That firing process is what makes authentic engobe more durable and gives each piece its one-of-a-kind, artisan-made feel.
